what are we learning?

  • READING - 1st grade is currently reading Stellaluna. Your child is immersed in learning story elements such as character, setting, and retelling the plot. Your child should be entering first grade with a Just Right Level of E or higher.

  • WRITING - We are currently beginning our personal narrative writing unit. Your child will learn to write a story about a small moment in their life. They will learn to write a story with a clear beginning, middle and end. They will also learn to include details to describe a setting and include feelings.

  • MATH - For Topic 3, 1st graders will be learning to strategies to add numbers up to 20. They will also learn to solve math problems with a missing addend.

  • SCIENCE - First graders will learn about the structure of plants. They will learn to name the parts of a plant and how plants grow.

  • SOCIAL STUDIES - Students will be learning why families and communities are important.

how can you help?

  • READING - Use Raz-Kids EVERY DAY. Read a bed-time story EVERY NIGHT. Ask your child:

  1. Who was in the story?

  2. What did they do?

  3. What was the problem?

  4. How did they feel? Why?

  5. How did they fix the problem?

  • WRITING - Ask your child about their day. Try to make sure their story is in order. What happened first? What happened next? Have them describe what things looked like. Practice writing neatly. Use free worksheets at   www.handwritingforkids.com

  • MATH - Have you child practice adding objects at home. Use beans or pennies. Place 2 small piles. Have your child write the matching equation.

  • SCIENCE - Ask your child to describe the parts of plants they see outside. They should be able to identify the stem, leaves, flowers and discuss the roots underground.

  • SOCIAL STUDIES - Have your child name their family members.
